The Scoutreach/Urban Emphasis Division of the Pine Burr
Area Council has had a very unique and successful year in 2003. As we begin the strategic planning
process for the years to come and with the Lord's favor and guidance we will continue to grow His
kingdom together. We ended the year with 24 Eagle Scouts in the four years of the program, a historic
first for the State of Mississippi and a national level of achievement and national recognition. In
1999 the United Way Board in Hattiesburg gave the Pine Burr Area Council a Venture grant to kick
start the Urban Emphasis Division, with one part-time employee and 300 youth in the Hattiesburg Area.
Today we have two full time employees, which include a Director in Hattiesburg and an Executive in
Gulfport, three Vista Executives in Hattiesburg, Laurel and Gulfport, one part-time employee in
Picayune, over 3000 scouts in seventeen counties and 24 Eagle Scouts. In 1999 we had one district,
today we have two Districts, Twin Rivers based out of Hattiesburg and Silver Cloud based out of
Gulfport, and one new sub district in Laurel.
Through the generous support
of the community, friends of scouting, United Way and grants and other sources of support young boys
and teenage boys and girls have experienced scouting. School systems, churches, individuals and other
organizations have gone the extra mile to help our young population and future leaders.
As you will be able to see in
this report, we are all working together to do the Lord's work. Last year the state of Mississippi
spent over $120,000 per inmate. Last year you helped 3000 scouts with less than the state
cost for two inmates $237,797 in Scoutreach. You are the ripple effect in this very important time
in our national and world history.
Without your heart we would
not be at the beginning of the work of molding our youth with timeless values. Your support and
committment personifies the Scout Oath and Law. Thank you for your time, funds and resources
and for continuing to make a difference in the life of our youth.
